Youth and family support service
If you have a child, aged between 10 and 17 years, who is at risk of offending or re-offending, our youth and family support service can help.
We can help you and your family sort out your problems before things get out of hand.
We can provide help if your child:
- is in trouble with the police
- is going through or has been through court
- has been referred to youth justice conferencing.
Your child could also have another issue that may lead to criminal activity or contact with the police, including:
- problems or arguments at home
- problems with drugs
- problems at school—including truancy, suspension or exclusion.
Who we can help
Our youth and family support service is free for at risk young people aged between 10 and 17 years and their families.
The youth and family support service is located in Brisbane. We help young people and their families who live in the Brisbane region.
No one has to meet with our service if they do not want to. We can work with some members of your family even though others may not want to be involved.
How the support service works
We will arrange to visit at a time that suits you. We will visit you in your home or community, unless you would prefer a different location.
We offer short to medium term support to help you and your child:
- clarify your concerns
- find individual and family strengths
- link with community services
- develop strategies to manage current and future issues.
We also provide referrals to other services for specialist, long-term support. We work closely with other community agencies to make sure that your support is coordinated.
We can also offer you and your child the opportunity to participate in-group sessions, such as:
- changing habits and reaching targets
- aggression replacement training
- parent support
- other areas of need.
When support is available
Our staff are rostered to increase our availability to respond to the needs of young people and their families.
Our service operates from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) and from 9am to 6pm on Saturdays.
About our team
Our youth and family support service is part of the youth justice services that we provide to help young people.
We are experienced in working with people from different cultures including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We use translation services where this helps communication.
We work with people with a wide range of interests and backgrounds, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex young people.
Being referred to the service
You can refer your own family to our youth and family support service. A government department or community organisation may also refer you or your child.
As part of the youth and family support service, we will not copy any service that you are already receiving. We will only accept your referral if we can add value to meet your family’s needs.
We will not replace or copy other services that provide statutory youth justice interventions or child protection interventions.
